To use a DVD-RAM disc you need to create a filesystem on it, and mount it somewhere in the filesystem. Once you do that, you can use the disc like an enormous floppy. If you want normal users to be able to mount the DVD-RAM disc, you should include the 'user' or 'users' option on the fstab line.

This is true for CD-R(W) and DVD-R(W), DVD-RAM is a different beast...
