Thumbs up Linux Newbie

Am new to linux but purchased an acer one, discontinued line at comet for just under £130 and couldn't resist it, will a virgin dongle work with it?
Love computers and like to tinker so long as instructions are clear and easy to follow.

Any brand of dongle should work with it . . . what exactly are you wanting to do? (Install Linux, I suppose . . . but) You need to make a boot dongle to install with?

I found some good info at this link:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum...fm/808806.html

The fifth post down is by a guy who claims to have this working and provides the steps that he used.

It looks like there is a virgin-provided program which will cause the dongle to register as a USB modem, which can then be used to connect with pppd just like any other modem. Apparently, it also defines a separate USB serial device that can be used for SMS and other "3G-specific" data-type requests . . . but, for internet access, this guy's post should suffice.

I wish I could test it, but I have no way to. I hope that works.

This sight is wonderful and I have bookmarked all your solutions, and although I have not replied earlier it's because I was on hols in Amsterdam. I am pretty sure now that that I can negotiate with virgin in lite of the Setanta disaster, a dongle to complement my first experience into linux/linpus. Many, many thanks, will post to let u know how I get on. XXXXXXXX
