Hello all,

I'm looking for some help getting my wireless connection sorted and would greatly appreciate some advice. I'm new to linux so the problem might be obvious - then again it might not!

My setup is:

AMD Athlon 3200+ running dual boot with XP,
US Robotics 802.11g Wireless Turbo PCI Adapter (5416)
Connecting to a US Robotics Wireless Turbo Access Point and Router,
SuSE 10.0 installed and working (I think!),

As far as I can tell my wireless card is setup correctly (using an XP driver with ndiswrapper); using KWifiManager I can scan for networks and it picks everything up fine - seems to be an indication! I've turned WEP/WPA off for the purposes of getting things running.

As I say in the description though I simply cannot connect to the router.

Finally before the data - I'm not if it's of note but running KInternet causes an error "Connection to local and remote server refused. Maybe smpppd is not running or you are not member of the group "dialout". Also check the server settings in the dialog "various settings".

I'm now totally lost on this and have no idea what to try next - as I said before this is all fairly new territory for me.

Have you tried connecting to the network with 'iwconfig wlan0 essid USR8054'?

I have tried 'iwconfig wlan0 essid USR8054' and this didn't seem to help. However I will give it another shot when I get home (I'm at work right now) and post the output.

Yes if the above does not give an error message then i would say that it has worked. If no error then all you need to do is start your dhcp daemon and ask for an IP address. then your in business...
Im unsure how to do this in SUSE. in slack: #dhcpcd <adaptor>
ie. #dhcpcd wlan0

then try #ifconfig wlan0 (you may now have an IP).

Yeah, Linux seriously needs some better wireless networking tools so you don't have to enter a bunch of commands in the terminal to see available wireless networks and connect to them.

Thanks very much for your help. I finally got the problem fixed!

When I first failed to get Wireless working I tried installing something called Linuxant (or similar) basically a wrapper like Ndis. Well this was sitting on localhost and blocking my attempts to connect. I uninstalled the package and connected! Can't believe I didn't think of it sooner. Writing this from Linux. Hurray!

Now all I have to do is get my sound and video cards working...

Thanks for your post. I have been struggling with getting my wireless connection to work for months (compaq presario v2000 with broadcom running under mandriva 2006). It was only after reading your post did I recall that I too had tried the Linuxant driver almost on day 1 and had forgotten about it. A quick rpm -e driverloader and had the wireless up within a minute.
