xmms stutters but it just won't start

Hi-
I just installed Fedora Core 4 on a Sony VAIO with an on-the-motherboard SiS sound card, using module snd-intel8x0. I went through all the steps to get mp3s to play, however when I load one xmms will only stutter the first few notes about four times and then give up. Amarok will not even get that far with them- it looks as though it is going to play, but the progress bar never moves and there is no sound at all. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

What about attempting to play other forms of audio such as .wav file or even audio cd's - do you still encounter the same problems? If not, what program did you use to convert your mp3's in and did you use any fancy encoding options?
