My SQL and M$SQL

I have an application that requires that we have SQL running in order to have the DB's we need to run it.
The application is called Practice Manager- and it runs on its own platform in clients - (the future has it to be web based).
My question is would My SQL work in such an enviornment?
How complaitable is My SQL to M$SQL?
While I don't expect us to do this very soon I just wanted to know my options here..

From my understanding as long as the database uses Structured query language (SQL) to listen/talk to other apps it allows at very least a basic layer of compatability.

If this 'Practice Manager' states it only works with M$SQL then you may be out of luck. My advice, just try it with MySQL

Any suggestions as to how you would go about transfering those db's mysql?
Seems to me there would be some sort of migration tool or away to restore the db from from tape. I don't think the last is even remote because M$ locked down SQL so tight we had problems restroing it to an original server... Piece of garbage is what M$SQL is... IT works fine just so long you don't breath around it...
