Exclamation installing new version of XFree86

Hi,

I have Mandrake 9.2, kernel 2.6.0.

I tried installing the new version of XFree86 from www.xfree86.org, I followed all the rules there, executed Xinstall.sh and clicked yes to overwrite all the configuration files but now when I try to boot-up I can't get a GUI. Momentarily during boot-up, the graphical interface tries to show up, but w/ a black & white color and w/ the mouse in form of 'X' in the middle of the screen and then it goes back to text.. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
I tried to run xfree86config but I think that doesn't exist anymore.

(btw.: I also have the fglrx module installed for my ATI video card, although that's another problem).

If any more information is necessary, please let me know.

Thanks a lot!

You're right, xfree86config doesn't exist anymore. What does exist are: xf86config and Xconfigurator. The black and white background with the 'x' mouse is the X windows screen. If GUI loading didn't continue to KDE or GNOME, this would be the screen that you'd see. Anyway, that problem does sound like something weird with the X configuration. So, try running xf86config or Xconfigurator.

yeah i had forgotten the name of the configuration applications. But now I've already run xf86config and fglrxconfig (to configure the fglrx module for my ATI Radeon card). Now, the GUI blinks once, goes blank, then when it tries to load again it actually loads the GUI but the keyboard doesn't work. I can't type anything on the username and password boxes, even though I've configured both the /etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 correctly. The mouse seems to work but that's it. I can't login beacause I can't type anything.

I thought Mandrake 9.2 already comes with Xfree86 4.3?

MDK 9.2 does come with XFree 4.3. The latest version is 4.4 RC2. They just have a strange way of numbering pre-releases.

I think the problem is with the customizations that mandrake makes to KDE (and possibly to X as well). I had the same problem with mandrake's kde but when I compiled kde myself, the problem disappeared. Also it seems that icewm can be started with a few hickups.

To see more details, boot up to a text console instead of the gui login and then use
startx
to start X. You can see the error messages on the console screen (use ctrl-alt-F1 to get there; ctrl-alt-f7 to get to the X screen). I'm pretty sure that you'll see that kde is looking for some files that it cannot find.

I used the defaults for most of the install questions and X started up with KDE no problem. That is, I chose not to overwrite things that had been customized when install script said it wasn't necessary. Had to reconfigure XF86Config-4 like you already did though, since they changed the file format. Issue I had was with the new Mesa 5 library and DRI. Anyway, popped in my Mondo Rescue CD and restored, so really can't help you further, sorry.

It's not in the log of X as far as I can tell. It's probably easiest to just try to start X with
startx
from a text terminal. If you are at a graphical login, press ctrl-alt-f1. This will get you to a text login screen. Login, su to root, and then do
init 3
this will shutdown X (and with it the login manager). Get back to a normal user and so
startx

The screen will go blank and after a few flickers it will probably go back to the terminal screen. If not, you can switch to the original terminal screen with ctrl-alt-f1 where you will see any outputs that were made. (I think they would be added to /var /log/messages, but not sure). X is probably running fine but the problem is with kde. Judging from Crito's post above, it seems that there are a few files that are different from the mandrake version and the version from Xfree.

BTW, I'm pretty confident that this is not to do with the new 4.4 since I had exactly the same issue with XFree4.3 when I compiled and installed it myself on my mdk9.1 box (which already had 4.3 - just wanted to see if it improves performance if I compile it myself). It's just that mandrake seems to add/change some files.

the problem is that when I reach the Graphical login screen, the keyboard simply doesn't work... all keystrokes are ignored... only the mouse works. That's why all my fixing is being done under failsafe mode. Do u think that would make a difference when making these things u suggested?

If not I'll be happy to try these out and tell u what happens.. I seem to have a talent for fiding strange problems...

when in fail safe mode, open
/etc/inittab
and look for the line
id:5:initdefault:

change this to
id:3:initdefault:

This changes the default run level to 3 which does not start up X and the graphical login automatically. You should now be able to login in text mode and start X with
startx

if this locks up your keyboard, there's something wrong with your
/etc/XF86Config-4

I wouldn't know what exactly though. Hopefully, you can start X with this method w/o locking up your keyboard.
