Can't install Firefox or IceWeasel on Kubuntu

I do aptitude install firefox... it goes through the motions without complaint but nothing is added to desktop, panel or works by typing "firefox" at the command prompt. I've also tried the "adept-installer" which does an amazing job of adding a firefox icon...nothing else.

Please help.

What happens when you type "firefox" at the command line?
Can you post any error messages here.

Are you sure you got no error messages from aptitude?
