However, I created a new user on my machine, logged in, ran Amarok, filled out the wizard with SQLite and the home directory as the places to scan, and it opened just fine.
There are two obvious differences I have between the two users:
1) I scan a directory, owned my me but on a separate drive (this really should have nothing to do with this issue), and
2) I use Postgres 8.1 as the database server on a separate machine.... but I didn't think to try to get Etch to install the 8.1 client.
I'll try to get that client installed and I'll post my result(s).
Otherwise, have you tried to add a new user and test with it?
This is a pretty old thread, I already fixed this issue. I can't remember how exactly, I should have posted it in this thread... I would guess that I just deleted my ~/.kde/apps/amarok directory and ran through the wizard again. I was using the inbuilt SQLite database and Xine backend.
I didn't think to check the date on the thread until after I had posted.
I installed the Postgres 8.1 client ('apt-get install postgres-8.1').
That didn't do it by itself, so I deleted the ~/.kde/shared/apps/amarok directory but it was the amarockrc file (or files, since there were two of them), in ~/.kde/share/config/, that needed to be deleted and the wizard ('amarokapp --wizard') that needed to be run again. I used the proper postgres config for my 'remote' server and that did the trick.
I might have been having problems because of my migration from FreeBSD to Debian.
Same problem for me here. I remove my Ubuntu to get on Debian etch, and when I installed amarok the program run the first-time wizard and ended up crashing.
Renaming ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok in amarok_old let me start amarok fresh-new, but now (a big) part of my collection is without cover. any idea how to recover my old settings?
that's right, but after collecting 10k songs from quite obscure artists, it's a real pain to find again all the covers.
lucky, I was able to recover all the covers with a little copy and paste. after renaming ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok in amarok_old and run the wizard, I just copy the cover folder from amarok_old to amarok, and the program just matched all the albums with the correct pictures.
it's like amarok didn't like the passage from ubuntu and 1.4.7 version to debian and 1.4.4 version; hope the trick can be useful to someone else.
