Does the fact that LQ will be keeping 100% of its color scheme impact this "I prefer the general layout of LQ to AQ" sentiment? If not, what specifically don't you like?

You know you spend too much time with computers when you do like I did a few nights ago:
I was trying to fall asleep, and as I was falling asleep, I started dreaming:
"Got to fall asleep, ok, copy the fall asleep file over to the other computer, No, I've got to install the fall asleep program on the other computer, No! Just Fall Asleep, it has nothing to do with computers! just fall asleep!"

Another thing to consider is if a new forum software is used, how well will the old posts transfer over. I'm on another forum that recently transfered to a new system, and some of the old posts are full of code in the text.

Some additional feedback:

* While we have no plans to vet new questions or questions by new members, making it easier to find answers to common questions certainly is a topic of interest. It's possible we'd be will to scan a members first post and offer suggested threads before making the post, for example. I'd certainly be open to further discussion on the topic.

* The Helpful system (and to a lesser degree the thread rating system) were implemented to address the issue of finding quality content at LQ and allowing it to rise to the top. This is another area where I'd be open to ideas on where we can improve and think further discussion would be beneficial.

I'm not sure where you got this assumption but 1) it's demonstrably not true and 2) the design decisions we make and the direction we take with LQ is never predicated on revenue. I try to make all decisions based on what is best for the community and what will provide the best member experience.

I don't think my understanding is totally correct. What I interpreted was just software that run behind the UI is replacing. I don't mind that as long as most features are kept the way they were. Android forums can reasonably disappear. I have got no plan to use mobile devices now and may be in the future. One underlying reason is that they are either too small or too crispy. In fact, I really don't know that whether a tablet computer can take over most of a laptop's tasks the way a laptop does to a desktop pc at the moment. AQ UI visually acceptable to me. I don't care much about look since I always pay my attention to contents first. Keep going.

Since we are on suggestions, the "unread posts" function does not always take you to the first unread post. If that can be improved, that would be good. I don't know how well the AQ does on that, as one has to use it regularly to start finding this error.

Another improvement that can be made, is, I like the way that phpbb has the "View Your post" at the top of the page, and how it presents it compared to how this forum does. It presents the "view your posts" in the same format as this forum presents the "subscribed threads" page. There might be a lot of people that like the way that "view your posts" page is here, so to improve this board, you might want to put a link at the top of the page to "subscribed threads". Having a link at the top of the page makes it easier to keep track of threads that you have participated in. When ever I go to a forum that I use, that's the first page I go to.

You can click "My Posts" or "My Threads" in the side nav to access this. Subscribed threads are simply threads you have subscribed to, which you may or may not have posted to (that is, you can subscribe to a thread without posting in it and you can post to a thread without subscribing to it).

I have my own link to subscribed threads on my browser start page, so when I click on my link to LinuxQuestions it goes directly to subscribed threads. So that works well for me.

Thanks for emailing me, Jeremy. The Android site looks great. I checked it out and i guess i am registered. I don't as yet have an Android phone. But my daughter has several. She works for Verizon and teaches other employees. She does not use Linux. I love Linux and now have Ubuntu 11, after using MSWindows for many years. I love learning how to use Linux and have taught my self the basics. So will continue to read all the info that is relevant to my situation. Thanks again for letting me be a member. Your friend.

culaterout, as I said, I have many years in the IT industry, starting out as a grunt programmer. I am aware that lots of techies intermingle on the different fora, and if they've read what I wrote and what I'm writing now, then good! Actually, that's part of the problem. At the moment, I have accounts on this forum, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Bugzilla and a couple of others. I have needed each of these accounts to ask questions and it pisses me off mightily. One thing NOBODY can do anything about is having some kind of super-forum, so we just have to slog away as best we can. That's a major problem no-one can solve and we all have to live with it.

I am NOT slagging off the efforts of techies. What I AM slagging off is the "tone" used. Yes, I agree that questions could be phrased better, but so could the answers. That's my point. Educate the people answering the questions, but also educate the answerers.

Just to put myself in the firing line here, I recently got an Archos 7o. (Btw, I am also waiting on tenterhooks for the Angstrom image to appear for that hardware...guess who'll need yet another login account for a different forum?) I wanted to attach my USB stick to it. Says it can be done. So, after looking at a picture of the Archos USB adaptor, I thought to myself: hmmmm, looks like I need nothing more than a female-female connector on the USB cable they already supplied in the box. Why go shell out for another adaptor? So that's what I went and bought for less than a buck. Didn't work.

Being a techie, I did some digging. And I found that sneaky Archos has TWO slightly different micro-USB input formats: Micro-A and Micro-B. And only one (i.e. the one that DIDN'T come with my new toy) puts the Archos in master-mode instead of slave-mode. Now, if I was a newbie and had to ask a question about it, there is a clear and present danger that I would get slammed. "USB stick won't work?!" I might say. Which is, of course, close to useless. (You don't have to tell ME that.) HOWEVER, what else would you expect a newbie to say? A better title might be: "Any workarounds to change USB Micro-B to Micro-A for Archos 7o?" or "Trying to source USB Micro-A input for Archos 7o" or "How can I put the Archos 7o into Master mode?". But, you see, until I actually found out what the problem was, I wouldn't have known to craft a better question.

Look, this is going WAY off tangent. I know that. Sorry Jeremy. But I'm trying to be a Linux evangelist out in the Real World here and it's really really difficult when I cut friends distros and give it to them and walk them through major features and they come back with some minor problem (almost always minor) and say, "Wow, I went to a Linux forum and they bit some guy's head off for asking about PulseAudio!" or "I asked a question about wireless and nobody got back to me!" or "They told me to type in 'xyz -Ar'...but WHY?" So if I seem a tad frustrated, it's because I listen to way more of these kinds of remarks than you probably do.

My final word on this so I don't continue derailing the feedback discussion: The newbies consider you gods, guys. That's the honest truth. How about giving them some gentle rain instead of thunderbolts?

The colour, format and function of LQ has served us well for several years. If it works, why change? The AQ sample did nothing to enhance my experience, and it strikes me that this is change for change's sake, a marketing approach. We are mostly engineers or aspiring engineers who see LQ as a tool. We don't respray our keyboards yellow to improve our coding ability, so let's not change the forum. The content is the critical issue. If you said you were going to improve (for example) the search algorithm, something that made the tool better, I'd support it, like I support putting programmable keys on a keyboard.
