Hmm, were the votes all lumped together for the *buntu distro's? I don't think that's right if it is the case. I know that the arguments will be that it is merely a desktop environment that is different. I disagree now as Kubuntu has a lot of differences to its parent Ubuntu. Plus, if you are going down that route then why not lump in Mepis and Mint as they are close derivatives of Ubuntu too.
Please, as a serious suggestion for next year, can we see the various *buntus have their own rating?

I'll agree with that as soon as other distros also become where I can easily install them by downloading from like severs... I have Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubunutu all co-existing on what I guess is Kubuntu because I installed that first (or was it Ubuntu? I honestly don't remember). However, I can't have SUSE or even Mint running on the same install in this way. To me, all of the Ubuntu distros are the same basic thing.
MEPIS is emphatically NOT a "close derivative of Ubuntu". Your apparent confusion between whether "based on" means "uses the repositories of" or "is derived from" illustrates that the MEPIS community may have been wrong to describe MEPIS as "based on" Ubuntu during the roughly one year period when MEPIS used the Dapper LTS repositories.
Are you aware that MEPIS is older than Ubuntu? Hard to be a derivative of something that hasn't been invented yet, Einstein, Star Trek, & Rocky Horror not withstanding.
<rant>
One of my pet peeves w/ Ubuntu, all their social conscience not withstanding, is that Mark Shuttleworth's fortune has distorted the market place. We cannot tell how much of the *buntus' popularity is due to technical merit & how much is due the same $$ effect that keeps Gates, Balmer, & M$ dominant.

<challenge>
BTW, & FWIW, MEPIS seems to have pioneered the -- i.e. they were the 1st to make a -- live install CD; an idea later adopted by Ubuntu & others. Since the only link I can find about this is to an unsupported claim on the ML web site, I would welcome a documented counter-example.

Isn't that strange:
KDE > GNOME (52:35, according to the poll), but
ubuntu >> kubuntu (2519:448 H.P.D in 2007, according to distrowatch.com).
What does that mean???
The typical *buntu user is NOT a KDE fan? Kubuntu has a marketing problem? Kubuntu sucks (it's my favorite distro, though...)? Ubuntu is everybody's darling?
Distrowatch and the poll are representing a totally different audience? With that much discrepancy the poll can't be worth?
Sorry if some of the questions sound provocative. I don't want to hurt anyone. I just trying to state it boldly and make a point.
I tell you about Suse.
It is good I got to admit>before i switched to Ubuntu( end let me tell you that was good choice the support is grate)You have to keep in mind that lot of Linux users are paying attention to the fine underlining of each distro.the fine underlining is licenses,finances,ownerships,long term effects and all the other stuff that makes the products free and open source.
If you read about Suse and there "Fine underlining" you find that there is connection between Suse a certain corporation(s) that sticked there hands in it and......
Made it to some Linux users undesirable to support and use.
Myself like many other Floridians were confused & didn't understand what the voting was about. We would like to have the Florida results recounted by an indepentent source. If the results are not to our liking we wish to have a second election as soon as possible.

Distrowatch's counters are purely on the number of hits. So all it shows is that more people look for Ubuntu than Kubuntu.
Was XMMS a votable choice for Media Player? Because I don't really like media players like Amarok, iTunes, etc. I like the light-weight ones that DON'T rely on playlists.
i followed some of the commentary/justification of the voting. i gathered it was a choice of features/complexity over player only/simplicity. and marketers have taught us "change" is the american way. when i work, i work in a college bookstore and the students want more features than they use.
my vote for simplicity was based on fear of big bro. while the record companies are on their deathbed, there are plenty of folks who want to know what audio/video you have and where you got it. the features you get could include a noose.
What the hell, a "noose"? I don't think a media player can provide a loop at the end of a rope, much less a rope itself. I guess people just don't really care anymore, it's like they WANT to waste memory.

I'm a typical Ubuntu user, and I can't even use Kubuntu properly; why? Because Kubuntu has hardware issues with my laptop; but the issues only happen AFTER I install it to the harddrive.
