why isn't my disc drive not reading cd's or dvds?

lately out of no where my cd/dvd drive stopped working. it will eject and al of that and when u have a disc in and close it, the little cd will show up next to the cursor as its trying to open, then it will not load a disc or say there's nothing in there. i have tried to uninstall the drive, disable it and re-enable and restart and nothing happens. if any one can please help it would be greatly greatly appreciated. please respond or e-mail mat a gosda_c@yahoo.com

my reply might have some stupid questions in it, but .....

#1 - drives normally don't just 'stop' working... unless thier bad.
(won't read, won't spin up, etc).... have you tried anather drive?

#2 - did you do anything right before it stoped working?
(edit a or some /etc files?, recompile the kernel? etc?)

#3 - does the drive work for other users? root?

#4 - happens on all CD's ? data? CD audio?

If you can't manually mount it and 'ls' it when your root,
I'd try anather drive.
