why does screen show contents of CD but doesn't read/play CD?

My first post homies!

ok, so i just bought parts for my computer off newegg, and assembled everything. Everything works fine, reg. case temp, reg. cpu temp, regular everything. I bought LInux cuz it was cheap and looked cool, and its working fine too. the only problem i have is that when I put a cd into my Rosewill CD/DVD combo drive, a folder pops up showing the content of the cd. It never does that auto play stuff, and whenever I try to open the autoplay content, it asks me which program to use. this is really buggin me out cuz i wanto play some games on my computer. could sum1 help?

if it matters, here are my computer specs:

AMD athlon 64, 3400+
512 DDR400
160 Gb Samsung HD
nVIDIA G-Force FX Bloody Monster 3, 128MB
Rosewill 52x/32x/52x/16x : CDR/CDRW/CDrom/DVDrom
nVIDIA nForce3 250Gb mainboard for AMD socket 754 Athlon 64 processor

p.s: I'm also not entirely sure what all of these things mean, so if sum1 could give me a definition, it would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of games are we talking about. linux can not natively execute windows programs. You will need to install winex.

all the new games comin out right now pretty much, like KOHan 2, Everquest 2, etc.
Its not that it only doesn't work on games, but it can't autoplay my cds that were bundled with hardware, like with the cdrom, graphics card, and motherboard.

also my computer freezes randomly, and there is a long delay with the mouse when i do anything involving the CD-rom.

thanks

auto play has been disabled for security reasons. Its better if you let it that way. Enabling autoplay is like opening an unknown email attachment without scanning (applicable for both windows and linux)

Most bundled software is going to be for windows and does not natively run in linux.

Wine is a compatibility layer for running windows applications in linux and winex is for games. I'm not a gamer and do not have a clue if any you have listed will work.

well its not just for games, but for any cd. I want to be able to play music, games, and run hardware installation cds. rite now i think my computer is using just the motherboard's integrated graphics instead of my 128MB graphics card. I just need to know how to get my computer to read/autoplay and run CDs meant for windows.

Also if anyone knows how to get a zip drive to work, transferring files from windows to linux, please explain in detail, without any computer code or confusing stuff!

Most likely cds that come with hardware are for Windows and not for Linux. You will have to install your hardware using other methods. Nvidia has a Linux driver available at www.nvidia.com.

As stated above, you will need WINE or WINEx in order to run windows games.

As for Audio CDs, did you install the analogue audio cable between the CD player and soundcard? If so, you should be able to simply put the CD in, and play it in KCD, or some other audio player. If not, you will need to use XMMS, and make sure the "CD Audio player" plugin is enabled, and then play the location /dev/cdrom.

I hope this helps

autoplay doesn't exist in linux, once a file system is recognized by the system (mounted) you can browse it, do whatever, but it will not execute a program for you, or anything, it will just leave it be until you tell it what to do

and those autoplay things are just for windows, sure you could write a script in linux to do that autoplay crap, but as already stated its a security risk
