Why can't I run files in terminal?

Hi,

I have an odd problem that I just cant seem to figure out.

I want to follow some instructions on setting up some software, but it says I need to execute certain programs. At first I could do this from the terminal window (by the way, I'm running Red Hat 9), but now I cant.

All it says is

bash: configure: command not found

But if I go through to home folder and navigate my way there I can see the files and open them for editing etc. In terminal I cant do anything at all.

Everything seems to be invisible to me like I dont have permission to view it, but I'm logged in as root ... I dont know how I can have any higher permission.

I'm really confused. Any help would be hot.

I forgot to mention, in terminal I can actually see the files I am trying to get to. Like, if I type ls or dir, they are listed. If I type them in as per the instructions, I just get that error.

Please help.

configure is in your current directory (assuming that at least you are there) but usually the current directory (./) is not in your path. You should be able to run configure using
Code:
./configure

Unbelieveable. The things they dont tell ya.

Thanks a bunch for that. As long as I can get it to work somehow, I'm happy.

Cheers
