Why can't I play media files from my network drive?

I'm a total novice to Linux.Have just installed Suse 11.2 64 bit on the second drive in my desktop, dual booting between it and vista. It is wire networked to a WD My Book network drive which contains my video collection as avis and my music collection as MP3s. Under Vista I just had to map the drive and away i went. Although I've managed to access the drive, via network places, I can't play these files in any of the suse players or VLC.I've got all the right codecs etc.I think I may have to set some form of mount point, but I can't get my head round what that is or how to do it.I'm really keen to learn so that I can eventually rid myself of windows altogether.
Many Thanks

To start with, copy one video file and one mp3 file to your Suse harddrive. Then try to play that video file and that mp3 file. Post any errors.

What video file format are you trying to play?
For mp3, you need an mp3 decoder. Run yast2, software management, and then try to search for "mp3".

Did as you suggested.Had no problem playing from the Hard drive with xine, vlc, amorak, smplayer and gnome player. Banshee desires the right codecs and totem gives either internal streaming error or internal data flow error. The movie files are all in avi format.
