Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and to linux so please bare with me a little :-)

Ok so here it goes, my problem is as follows:

I just recently downloaded vmware player and I'm using it to run backtrack 2.0 beta (the latest release), now everything goes smoothly, except for the Internet connection. I can't connect using backtrack, not only but my hardware isn't detected at all. Right now on my pc I'm running Windows XP pro with a Netgear Wg111t USB adaptor and it runs no problem. I did quite a lot of googling and found out that unluckily there are no drivers usable on linux for the WG111t but apparently it can work under linux. So now I face quite a dilemma: How do I get my usb adaptor working on backtrack? And since I'm running it on a VM how exactly do I "plug in" the usb adaptor to my virtual machine? Just how do I get my REAL hardware to be detected on my VIRTUAL machine?????



I tried a lot of stuff like configuring the IP with the same settings on windows, and strangely, when I do that my connection stops working on windows (still connected, just not opening any pages) and on BackTrack the connection/virtual eth0 finally gets detected (that is, when I try to ping for example, I don't get the "network unreachable " error) but still doesn't open any pages (Server not found)


I'm pretty desperate to solve this issue so any help you guys can provide would be GREATLY (emphasis on the greatly) appreciated.

Ps: Ipconfig shows 2 new ethernet adaptors after installing Vmplayer:

1. Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet8
2.Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet1

They both have IP Adresses and Subnet Mask's what their lacking is a default gateway and a connection specific DNS suffix.

This doesn't actually answer your question; but the point of BackTrack is that it is a live CD which you can use without having to modify your Windows system, since these tools are not available on Windows.

Running the thing in VMWare just defeats the purpose. All you are doing is making it more difficult to get your hardware detected, and slowing everything down.

I forgot to mention that I'm running bactrack on VMWare because the livecd won't boot up (when I try to boot it all I get is Linuxiso 3.11 2005-09-02, it doesn't go any further. And yes I did do md5 check and also verified with nero when burnt.), otherwise I wouldn't have gotten VMWare which as you said makes it harder.

Right now I need all the info I can get so if you have some please share.

Make absolutely sure that you burned the .iso IAMGE to the cd and didn't just burn the .iso file TO a cd. I had this problem many, many times when I started using Linux distros and wondered why they wouldn't load up.

The disc was burnt with the "Burn Image to Disc" feature, so this isn't the problem...I did all possible checks but it won't boot anyway...

I run BackTrack directly off my WinXP laptop using LILO. I also have VMserver running but would suggest not using this for BackTrack. My card is a Netgear WG511T for wireless connections.

Here are the particulars: Objective: Dual boot XP and BT

Used Partition Magic 7.0 to configure as follows 10 Gb Windows NTFS on hda1 30 Gb Second FAT32 on hda2 (shared and VM directories) 4 Gb for BT with ext2 on hda5 1 Gb Swap with ext2 on hda6

Install BT from CD (using 05022006 Beta) df -h shows above plus tmpfs 1 Gb then Start BT Installer > source /boot > Install to (/mnt/hda5) > Write MBR (/dev/hda) Be patient as this could take up to 30 minutes

Remove BT CDR and let system boot to newly installed HDD. Then type liloconfig in console and did the following: (1) Take expert option and install header or #1 - follow instructions (2) At prompt use third option for MBR (3) Then setup Linux - in my case used /dev/hda5 (4) Then setup Windows - in my case used /dev/hda1 which was marked active (5) Then install Lilo - mine hangs but just went to a prompt after a few seconds (6) When finished don't forget to run lilo so you will see both BackTrack and Windows set on Lilo - This is a critical step as not saved as with GRUB (7) Then vi or nano lilo.conf under /etc Under section for Linux bootable partition config begins make sure you set read only to read-write. If you do not do this you will not be able to boot your new installation. (8) Run lilo at a prompt as in #6 above so you see added Windows * BackTrack
