is there really any difference besides price.
the website does very little to say benefits..
i know there is a big difference between Windows XP home vs Professional.
any suggestions would be appreciated.
theres a huge difference. whether it's worth the extra money depends or your needs. personal has no or very limited development tools and no apache, samba. all this can be added later from SuSe's ftp mirrors, but it's more of a pain than just poping the disk in.
In your post that was closed you said about installing the Ati drivers. If thats what you want just buy Xandros 2 or download libranet 2.8.1(free now).. Pretty sure the drivers are preinstalled on both. Could be wrong. If your still having a tough time with getting your Radeon to work that is. They can be a little pesky setting up at first. Also jag you could download Suse off the ftp servers and that would save lots of hassle. Suse is a pretty easy distro to get your Ati card working.

slacker,
if i download suse off of ftp is it personal or the professional version?
i cant see spending any $$ on a distro that doesnt meet my needs. i like mandrake a lot but it has a lot of problems for me as well. suse is really cool looking and i feel its more nub friendly due to placement of icons and the similiarity to windows..
i tried the suse live version. i will say this knoppix boots and loads faster then any live version i have used so far.. but knoppix isnt for me.. i want to be able to get rid of msft totally. i cannot do that till i get 3d working easier and my nforce 2 sound tweaked the way i want it.
Actually there are 3 big differences between personal and professional
-the price
-the commercial software
-the number of cd's and hence software you don't need to download
All free software that is on the pro version is also available on the free version if afterwards you change you're installation source to suse's ftp. Eg, in the personal version you don't have make, gcc or kernel source included. But these are availabe in suse's ftp. All pro software (except for whatever you'd had to pay for) is.
well i noticed that if you buy mandrake it comes with drivers for nvidia and ati. so i was wondering if the same would be for suse.
i dont have a lot of $$ due to wife being pregnant and 2.5 yr old son still in daycare. so money is tight. i cannot justify droppin 100 bucks on suse pro if i cant use it then its just a paperweight..
also, you said::::
Eg, in the personal version you don't have make, gcc or kernel source included. But these are availabe in suse's ftp. All pro software (except for whatever you'd had to pay for) is.
does that mean i have to download source separately?
If you go for the personal, yes. Ofcourse, you could try it all out before you buy and download. I see you have a radeon 9700 pro. Well, I have a 9700 and didn't get my card to work (note: newbie here). Ati and nvidia driviers are not included and must be downloaded afterwards.
crikey.. guess i may as well stick with winblows and get a new av software and get ready for about 700 megs worth of win updates.. spy bot ad aware.. diskeeper pro..
