A quick search using Duck Duck Go of "skype zorin 8" yielded this at the top: Install Slype on Zorin 8 and Create Launcher

There are of course many similar results. When using Linux, quick searches often yield great results. Odds are great someone has encountered the same error, installed the same program, or made the same mistake sometime before you

How did you try to install it? Software Center, from a terminal with apt-get. Zorin 8 is based on Ubuntu 13.10 which is no longer supported.

Thanks JK, I did the install as per the link. Good instructions in the vid on how to make a quick launcher also of interest.

Problem:- Skype goes to the start screen but gives an error message "unable to connect". Anyone know what that's about?

The obvious question would be: is your internet connection functioning normally?

FLASH!!! This may be related to your problem. Look here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ct-4175513174/
So are you running version 4.3 of Skype?

I'm still working on this. The version of Skype I got from the Zorin software center is Skype 4.2 - so it seems I need to update to Skype 4.3. However, as yet I have not found simple instructions for doing this.

You can download the .deb file from the skype website. You install it using the dpkg -i {.deb filename} command. Make sure that multiarch support is installed if you're using a 64bit system.

as for the multiarch support - I think I did that this afternoon - is there some way I can check?

If you have installed aptitude, you can use the command aptitude search multiarch. Otherwise, you can use this one: apt search multiarch-support

OK this is what happened:- I have the .deb file in my downloads folder.
I've entered the command "dpkg -i skype-ubuntu-precise_4.3.0.37-1_i386.deb"
I've got an error message that an administrator privilage is required.
I've entered this command "sudo dpkg -i skype-ubuntu-precise_4.3.0.37-1_i386.deb"
Got a message saying the file can't be found!!

More help please guys :-)

Where is the skyp file? Your user Downloads directory? You need to change to the directory in which the file resides to run the command.

So this is where I'm at now............
My guess is that this means I need to remove Skype version 4.2 before I can install version 4.3.

Quote:
[sudo] password for dude1234:
dpkg: considering removing skype-bin in favour of skype ...
dpkg: no, cannot proceed with removal of skype-bin (--auto-deconfigure will help):
skype depends on skype-bin
skype-bin is to be removed.

dpkg: regarding skype-ubuntu-precise_4.3.0.37-1_i386.deb containing skype:
skype conflicts with skype-bin
skype-bin (version 4.2.0.11-0ubuntu0.12.04.2) is present and installed.

dpkg: error processing skype-ubuntu-precise_4.3.0.37-1_i386.deb (--install):
conflicting packages - not installing skype
Errors were encountered while processing:
skype-ubuntu-precise_4.3.0.37-1_i386.deb

Guys,

A little internet searching gave me two ways to remove the old version of skype. The simplest was "sudo dpkg -r skype".

Is this correct? Do I need to be in any specific folder before launching this command?

kind regards
Jim
