Hi There,

As said by Tobi by default in Ubuntu root account is locked and the password is set to random hash value.

If you want to set password for root just type: sudo passwd root

Well there are two options that you can go with:

If you want to do command line way then: su - root and then just put in the password. Remember that there is a space on both sides of -

If you want to do GUI then log out of KDE. When it prompt you to put the username and the password for login then put the username as root and password that you have just set up for root.

You can enable root logins on GUI if you want. Just edit the following line: AllowRootLogin=true

in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc file

Edit: Also let me know that the directory is mounted on which partition. You can check it by: df -h

Also I would like to see how the filesystem is mount for that type: mount | grep /dev/sdxx or mount | grep /dev/hdxx

sd is for scsi and hd is for ide and where first x will be controller on which the device is connected and next x will be the partition number.

Upon saving the document:
Quote:
The document could not be saved, as it was not possible to write /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc.
Check that you have write access to this file or that enough disk space is available.

Use:

Code:
sudo dolphin
That's the 'buntu way.

BTW, that will open dolphin as super-user for that session.

Please, first things first. What filesystem do you have on the partition you are trying to access, eg NTFS, FAT32, ext4, ext3, etc? You get write permissions on an NTFS and FAT32 partitions in a different way than on a linux filesystem.
Second, I assume you don't want to login as root every time you want to write to this partition and even if you did, the login manager has root disabled in *buntu so that is absolutely the wrong way to go.
Third, the appropriate way to do what you want is to create and entry in your /etc/fstab file for the partition in question and set the appropriate permissions for that partition there. That's really easy to do and I can show you how to do that, but I need to know the filesystem on the partition in question and the linux device file for that partition, eg sda1, sdb4, etc. If you are not sure how to determine the above info, post back and I'll walk you through it. Also copy and past your /etc/fstab file as well.

@ Bhakta Neal,

There can be two reasons for it that I can think of:

1. Either your root partition is mounted as read only. Which you can check by typing: mount .If it show / partition to be mounted as rw then check the next.

2. Check attributes set to /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc. You can check it by typing: lsattr /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc if you see any attribute which say i, it means that immutable attribute is set on that file and you cannot change anything in that file. If you want to change then you have to type the following command:

chattr -i /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc and then try to edit the file.

Also provide us the information that I have requested in my previous post

I WANT EVER DRIVE, EVEN THOSE I TEMPORARILY MOUNT, TO AUTOMATICALLY MOUNT, EVERY TIME, WITHOUT SOME VOODOO MAGIC CODING BS. I JUST WANT TO ACCESS ALL MY STUFF, WHENEVER I WANT, LIKE I DID WITH XP. IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVEB A KUBUNTU WORK WITHOUT THIS AGGREVATION EVERY TINME?????????????/
