My wife took the disc with the ubuntu disc image and tried it on her mom's computer. It tried to boot and the Ubuntu logo comes up, but the red dots flash white at first and then just stay red. Is this distro too much for her Compaq 4410us? specs are 1.3 gig celeron and 128 MB of ram. Would lubuntu work better? (I didn't send that disc with her for some reason.) Is there another distro that's even more resource friendly??

128 MB of RAM is to less to run Ubuntu as live-system, and I believe it is to less to run it installed also. You should consider to upgrade the RAM or to use a less resource hungry distro, like Antix or Puppy Linux. Or Maybe you should install a distro as minimal system and then put a lightweight WM like Icewm, Fluxbox or Openbox on it, together with leightweight apps.

I'm downloading Puppy Linux, Damn small Linux and Tiny Core linux - do any of those have web browsers bundled in?

Tiny core will need Firefox or some other browser installed. Puppy comes with SeaMonkey usually depending on what Puppy you downloaded (different breeds). Damn Small Linux comes with old Firefox. It is a dead distro though.

If you downloaded lupu Puppy 5.1. Your 128 mb of ram won't stand the strain. Tiny Core will boot though. Tiny core is Damn Small Linux revived by one of DSL developers. Read the Tiny Core Wiki and Forums on how to install Firefox, Desktops,use the package system it comes with etc.......

For puppy. You may need a smaller puppy download distro of 90 MB as Puppy runs in ram and will need it to finish booting.

Edit: forgot to mention. You will need to make a swap partition of lets say 512MB. It will improve booting and running a Linux distro.

I think, even with a small distro it will not be much fun to surf the web with 128 MB RAM. If it is possible I would put as much RAM in it as I can.

how about puppy 4.3.1 (104MB) or feather linux?

Puppy 4.31 should boot. Without a swap partition. It will run slow though.

and now, I'm finally going with DeLi 0.8 and Puppy 2.17. hopefully one of these will do the trick.

Have you tried the latest puppy 5.11. I have played with it a bit and I think it should run with 128MB RAM. After all it is targeted for older computers; however I tried it with 384MB RAM. It comes with the midori browser but you can install firefox or chrome with 1 click. There are many popular programs that install with only 1 click. If you could put another 128 or 256MB stick of RAM you would have a huge improvement though.
If that doesn't work, the older 4.31 is still very popular. Puppy runs fast (totally from RAM) and you can save your settings and additional packages to a file on USB, CD, even your HDD: it will scan for what's available.
Overall, it's a very slick distro for limited hardware.

BTW, 5.11 uses packages from Ubuntu Lucid Lynx.
