I have just decided to try Linux after using W*ndows for the last zillion years. Redhat 7.2 is installed, but I can't seem to get into 'x' - I have logged in as root (as I couldn't work out what my username was! - only remember putting the password in instalaltion proces) and typed 'startx' and the following appears:

execve failed for /etc/x11/x (errno 2)
giving up.
xinit: No sucy file or directory (errno 2): unable top connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.


Any ideas? (please bear in mind that I am a complete linux newbie, and don't understand most linuxtalk at the moment!)

To remember your username, once logged as root, type: cat /etc/passwd
For your X server problem, either it's a config problem and running utility like xf86config may help you or it's an installation problem (I fear that's it) and you have to correct or reinstall it

I have installed redhat 7.1 i, when i try to run it from the linux disc after putting the LiLo on the first part of the partition so that i could dual boot it with XP, all i get is the "LI" prompt then nothing, ive read some messages about this but i still havnt fixed it. Any way when i boot it from my boot floppy instead i get exactly the same error as on this thread, i have tried installing it again but i cant seem to shift this problem, any help would be nice. I know some people on this site want people to work for things because they had to and not just get handded the answer. I am willing to do this, could someone just point me in the right direction. Thank you.

Hey...well, most linux problems have a simple solution, and i would recommend just reinstalling again with the installation Cd's, choosing the "upgrade" option instead of install. Sometimes that gets rid of the error. I would also check the X server error numbers to see what exactly happened.
