but if the card apears in /sbin/ifconfig then the card MUST exist, and must be activated.

lol, its strange how for some people linux is easy, and for others hard.

i set up my friends linux pc for him, after a clean install, i just launched the web browser, and the internet just worked, even though the route to the modem went through a switch, then a hub, then a router... lol.

sounds like were close to solving this problem anways, let us know how it works out.

I cheated

I installed Mandrake and it detected everything 1st time!

But it doesn't seem to like my Radeon 9800Pro GFX card

Perhaps a bleeding edge beta of XFree86 would fix it. One never knows......Radeon support for Linux actually exists, so you have at least a fighting chance

have you installed the Radeon Drivers From ATI ???
if so have you properly edited the XF86COnfig file as instructed ?

you will have to post more info than "doesnt seem to like"
to get an accurate solution.

I try to install the driver and it warns me that the file clashes with another.....

file /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 from install of fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.7.0 conflicts with file from package libxfree86-4.3-23mdk

You have a 9800 Pro built into your motherboard, are you sure?
