kde login screen doesn't appear

Hi, I am a new linux user, having recently installed kubuntu 7.04 on my laptop. My problem is the following: when I turn on the computer, after the kubuntu proccess bar the login screen should appear- instead, I have a completely black screen, not able to write anything, nor can I see the mouse cursor. I can start the computer normally -and have the login screen- only when I go to the Grub loader menu and choose the option "linux image 2.6.20-16 generic"(the other options are "recovery mode" and "ubuntu memtest"). It's quite disturbing always to have to do that, so could someone give me an advice please...? Thanks.

As far as I can understand your problem, it does not work with 2.6.17.

May be this information will help you: The login screen is not provided by the KDE, but by the KDM. Setting up the package KDE does not require the login screen to be installed, because you can use any other one, too.

Login as root in text mode and start the KDE with the command "startx". Now there are two possibilites: If this works, enter the /usr/bin/systemsettings utility (as root) and set up the login. If it does not work, you have to reconfigure the X server.
