Idiot's Guide in Making KDE Work After Downloading It

I have downloaded KDE with the following command from terminal:

sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

After this, it took about 2 hours to download it. Now, my problem is I think it was not installed or I have to go to some configuration file because i got this message at the end of the command:

I think it is installed right? Now, the thing is the KDE does not appear in choose sessions. What should an ultimate newbie do to make it work? From configuration up to the point it appears in the choose session menu. Thanks!

in /etc/init.d is your startup scripts, you need either KDM, GDM or XDM as executable in there which will allow you to select your desired desktop, GDM or KDM offer the best options...

XDM will work too but you need a good working knowledge of the "under the hood" part of Linux when it comes to configuring & selecting different desktops...

How do I go to /etc/init.d? What should i type in terminal? I will appreciate a step by step guide and I hope you don't mind. Thanks.

You can try to remove gdm. Only one - kdm (kde desktop manager) or gdm (gnome desktop manager) is needed.

In fact it is possible to live without any of them, by logging in in a shell, that is continued with command
startx
Or better add startx to the personal initialization file, executed for login shells ~/.bashrc
So there are many different approaches possible, as you can see.

depending on what is in your /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc a simple startx command should do it, i modified my xinitrc file to point to ~/.xinitrc so users can make their own .xinitrc file in their home directory point to any installed desktop GUI, "startkde" is what KDE uses...

Hmm, forgive me but how do I ge there and change the settings in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc? How do i access this? Sorry but a total newbie here. What commands should I type in terminal? Can someone please teach me how? All of your suggestions are certainly good but the main problem of mine is how to access the configuration file to make the KDE work and this is what I do not know. Thanks again.

i suggest opening xterm and cd in to that directory and using Midnight Commander AKA mc, which is a great tool for navigating thru directories and has a built in text editor too, i suggest you install Midnight Commander and learn to use it, type in mc in an xterm and see if it is installed or not, if not apt-get install mc

I use Ctrl+Alt+F[1..6] to go to terminal on Debian Sarge. Ctrl+Alt+F7 gets You to the graphical interface by default.

Gdm and kdm can be removed by

apt-get remove kdm gdm

under degian sarge as root.
I do not remember if it worked under Ubuntu.

All I did in ubuntu is open synaptic and select the kubuntu desktop under the section meta packages. When it was all finished I logged out changed the session to kde and all was good. Have you tried that?
