I have a question about knoppix,. Hope I haven't mentioned a bad word.

Hi Everyone,

I have searched your forums and have not found anything relating to Knoppix. I purchased a CD with knoppis on it and it will boot my computer with some version of Linux. However, the desktop that comes up does not give me a clue about what to do next. Can anyone:
1. Give me some idea of how to make it perform.
or
2. Point me to a another forum that deals with the knoppix softwear.
or
3. Tell me if this software is similar to malware.

I will appreciate any help you can give. I have many years ago used Unix ans Xenix but, not much Linux. I occasionally get a Windows computer that will not boot and I plan on using this software to boot up and help solve what ever problem exists.

Thank you again.
Don

1. what does "perform" mean?? AFAIR Knoppix runs KDE... what trouble are you having?

2. It's "software" and this is a good place to ask

3. WTF?? no it's not malware

First, why did you BUY knoppix, when you can download it for free? http://www.knoppix.net/
And as acid_kewpie asked, what do you mean by "perform"? What did you think it was going to do when the desktop came up? Like Windows, the desktop comes up, then it's up to YOU to do something. What are you trying to accomplish?

Linux software runs on pretty much any version of Linux, so any software will run on any version of Linux. That said, if you're running totally from CD/DVD, you won't be able to INSTALL anything new, since you're not running off hard drive. You MIGHT be able to install something to a USB flashdrive, but that may take a bit of effort. What software are you looking for, and again, what are you trying to accomplish?

3. Tell me if this software is similar to malware.
Do you know what malware is? Knoppix is an operating system...like Windows, Mac OS, etc.

Good luck with that. If the Windows system won't boot, running Linux won't be an easy way to fix it, since the file systems are different, and the underlying OS is also different. You wouldn't be easily able to remove a virus, or any other such things that are (mostly) centered around Windows. You'd be better served by getting a copy of Windows installed onto an external USB drive, and boot from IT, and fix Windows systems that way. All the tools would be native to the OS.

I agree with TBone. Why did you buy it when it is free :-). You can download it from the link suggested by TBone.

The question that you have put up is not clear? What do you mean by make it perfor? Are you trying to install it on hdd? If that is the case then the following link might help.

I would imagine the person BOUGHT the OS on a CD/DVD. On the Knoppix website, one can pay a couple USD instead of going thru the process of downloading the program, burning it to a CD/DVD and then running it. I went ahead and downloaded it and burned the ISO to a CD/DVD (there are two different versions of the Knoppix system with the DVD having much more in the way of programs on it.

As for making it perform...it seems pretty simple to me as I tried the OS and had difficulty with it. The person is simply asking how to make it WORK, (which the person calls "perform". By 'WORK' I mean how to USE it. I clicked on several of the programs and was totally clueless what was going on. One example is trying to install 'MOZILLA'S FIREFOX'. I like Firefox as a browser. What happened when trying to do exactly that was so convoluted that I gave up. I think THIS is what the person means by "making it perform".

I never had any problems using DOS, never had any problems using versions of Windows from 2.1 thru 3.+++ up to now using Windows 7. LINUX based systems like Knoppix totally elude me; but, I'm bound and determined to learn the system. It's just going to take time to figure it out. Like the MAC OS, it uses programs with "new to me" strange name conventions. Office means typing, spreadsheets, stuff you'd do in an office. Calling a similar program "DOIT" or say "WORKING" is ambiguous. Work could very well be an office; but, it could also be construction at a jobsite, running a worm farm, etc. etc. Just takes a lot of time to figure out how these names originate. With that said, I am looking forward to getting away from Windows BLOATWARE OS...a system which has never been able to use either regular memory or video memory like it should, and away from HUGE PROGRAMS which can be done using a lot less HD space, memory, etc. etc.

You might try going to the knoppix.net site to get information on the Knoppix OS:

http://www.knoppix.net

There Documentation and Forum tabs where you should be able to get information. The Linux system on the CD is called Knoppix which is based on the Debian Linux operating system.

Dunno exactly what you have so I agree with the above.

If you do have a real version of Knoppix then you have what used to be the KING of live cd's. Knoppix was the first major distribution that worked well on many systems as a live cd. Now everyone has a live cd and they are quite good. Knoppix use to deliver everything but I think he got burned out.

The apps should kind of look like a normal windows but we'd need to know what version you have. The newer Knoppix is a LDXE based but may start in an odd screen. By default I think it starts in Adrian which is the name of the Klaus's wife who is sight impaired. To boot to a normal GUI I think you need to type or select some boot choice.

See also knoppix cheat codes for boot options.

It's the latest according to their website...KNOPPIX 6.7.1 / ADRIANE 1.4 - Live CD / DVD.

yancek: thanks. I have been to their website and will continue to use it as well. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about the system without having to go back to school to learn a whole new language. heh

jefro: thanks. I'll look into those boot codes. The browser which comes with the system worked fine...I just preferred Firefox...but may have to go ahead and stick with the installed one until I can figure out the OS.

I take it that YOU guys aren't using Knoppix. Care to share which OS's you ARE using? I have Ubuntu, Pony and I think an older version of Red Hat laying around. I know that this is asking the same question as what type of car do you like to drive.

I want SIMPLE, easy to use, non-memory hog, non-video-memory hog, etc. etc. I eventually will also run it on my two computers running my ham radio equipment. OH, and by "SIMPLE" I mean something which this old geezer (67 yo) can figure out how to use without burning too many brain cells to get there. LOL
T.I.A. for all your help.

A lot of us have used Knoppix.

Remember that Knoppix is not designed to be installed to your hard drive and used for day-to-day computing; you can do that, but, the last time I read the Knoppix docs, it was not recommended.

Rather, Knoppix is used to boot to a ramdisk without touching your hard drive. It is most commonly used to boot a misbehaving computer so that you can back up data files files prior to fixing it and then, if possible, fix it, if the problem is a software problem. I have used Knoppix on several occasions to edit config files that I borked on an installed system or to take a look at a friend's Windows system which wasn't working properly.

It can also be used to introduce Linux to someone without having to touch their existing system. In my case, the first Linux I booted was a Knoppix Live CD that I d/led and burned. I took one look and said, "I wants me some of that."

To answer your question, I use Debian, Ubuntu, Slackware, and Fedora regularly. Slackware and Debian are my favorite distros because I value stability over bleeding edge.

I use Ubuntu because I bought two Dells back when Dell was making factory-installed Ubuntu easily available; they work fine and they have Broadcom wireless which can be an annoyance to get working on some distros so I haven't bothered to change them. I have Fedora on a box right now because, well, what the heck? I wanted to learn my way around Gnome 3 (no, I don't like Gnome 3 much and when I get around to it I'll configure up Fluxbox and use that instead of Gnome).

Hope this helps.

As indicated above, Knoppix was basically designed as a tool to be used from a CD/DVD. In fact, there is a page on the knoppix.net site that specifically recommends NOT installing to the hard drive and explains why you should not unless you are a Linux expert. Immediately after that disclaimer, they explain how to install to a hard drive.

A good source of information is the web site distrowatch. They have listings with information about different distributions and links to many so you can get more detailed information. If you see a distribution which interests you, go to their web site and read about it and specifically find out about minimum hardware requirements for it, usually somewhere on the site. Otherwise just google minimum hardware requirements Ubuntu 11.04 (substitute whichever distribution you want).

You can download iso images of the various distributions free. Once you have a distribution, if you want to test others without burning a lot of CDs and installing them, you can install VirtualBox on your Linux system and use it to test others.

I'm not too worried about hardware because I'm running a quad core processor with 6 gigs of memory and over 3 TB of hard drive apace.

I have never cared for the look of the MAC DESKTOP or, for that matter, the look of the Linux desktops (which I have seen, so far). I have a 60 GB partition on my main drive which I've been thinking about using for a 'LINUX' type system....just not sure yet which version to use.

I did purchase a fairly large book on Ubuntu. I may go ahead with that one, for now, as it will allow me to at least look up stuff on the book while trying it. I will also check out the Slackware and Debian as well. I'm really going for simplicity as well as ease of use which LOOKS good to me.

One thing I've not checked out yet is the ability to use pgms which I have already like Adobe. I do a lot with Audition. I use MS Word, Excel and Outlook every day. I also do a lot with a very easy to use but feature-filled html site-building software. I also chat with a lot of long-time friends who are on yahoo, facebook and google. Those will also be requirements for whatever system I use.

Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll continue to use your expertise as I get more into the OS's.

Thanks for the replies, some good and some notso.

orbearis - Thank your for clearing up my statements in the thread starter. You hit the nails right on the head. The CD is supposed to boot to the KDE desktop. It does not do that. I have some things to try so, we will see.

I know that knoppix is part of the linux operating system but, when my search for knoppix, on the forum, did not return any hits, I wondered if it was a sin to mention it. My last 30 years or so have been spent in the DOS and windows areas.

Again, thanks to all who replied.

Since version 6, I think, Knoppix has changed to LXDE as standard desktop environment.

#jdgriff80 go to http://www.knoppix.com they have information there that you can read. I downloaded the DVD version, used the ISO to burn a DVD. It loads up just fine. The CD and/or DVD come in a zipped file. That zipped file contains an "md5" file. The instructions say to double click on that and run it. If the ISO is a GOOD ISO, then the md5 file will say so. If it has errors, the md5 file will notify you of that as well. I'd say either you have an error in the original ISO or there was an error when burning it to the CD/DVD.
