I forgot how to update my kernel =P

Running Fedora Core 5, trying to get my internet working. Apparently I need to update my kernel and install my kernel source(?). So I downloaded kernel-2.6.17-1.2157_FC5.x86_64.rpm and kernel-devel-2.6.17-1.2157_FC5.x86_64.rpm from the Fedora site, brought them over to Linux via CD. I ran them, and they seemed to install. It said the package was installed, and I can see the files in /usr/src/kernels but it doesn't seem to be running on the new kernel.

I know I've forgotten a step. I just can't remember what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Change grub to boot with the new kernel. There should be a config program for the Bootloader somewhere in the system settings. Else you can just change grub.conf. I did this many times with Fedora.

Missed a few steps there....

With the rpm command, you install the source code packages. Then you have to compile.
I'm not proficient in this, but the steps include "make menuconfig", "make", and "makeinstall". You also will have to make a new initrd.img

If none of this rings a bell, then go look at some docs on compiling the kernel. This one looks promising:
