I can't access any secure websites on SuSE9.0

I just installed SuSE9.0 about 4 days ago and have never used linux before. I am dual booting with windows. I had someone who knows linux install SuSE (They only used 2 disks which I now have). The professor that installed it downloaded firefox for my browser. I have not been able to access my hotmail, bank account, amazon cart, etc. I have only downloaded Gaim (which i couldnt get to work with MSN) and AMSN (Which required me to install Tcl/TK and TLS1.4.1 (both manually). AMSN works, but when i ask to go to my inbox, it just sits at the connecting to login.passport.com page. I then tried to access my hotmail manually and the same thing happens. Whenever I try to access any secure website the firefox browser just sits. The SSL and TLS1.0 buttons are checked in the browser options. I even tried removing TLS1.4 to see if that was the problem and that didnt work, although i am unsure as to how well i removed it. Can anyone please help?????
