how to 'starx' another window manager in the beggining shell?

hello

as you all might have noticed, I'm a total damned idiot newbie that doens't know how to start a gnome or a fluxbox session from the first main shell... I try "startx" and it loads kde... but I would like to try the others window managers

I tryed 'starx fluxbox', 'startx gnome'... the screen gets dark but then I get back to the shell with some erros... I think it doent know what "fluxbox" and "gnome" commands mean, cuz when I tryed "startx fuckyou", I got the same thing

I have Slackware 9.1 and I login at the main... but then what? what should I do next?

Slackware uses a chooser called xwmconfig. run that and you can select from available window managers. Note: this is set per user.

I never knew about xwmconfig...thanks. I'm not running Slack at present, but when I do set up another Slackware box I'll have to check that out.

What I had done in Slackware was set up an argument test in ~/.xinitrc
The thing about this was that it didn't seem to work with the startx command....I had to use xinit instead.
Another thing that seemed to work was creating a separate ~/.xinitrc file for each window manager, and renaming them depending on what WM i wanted to use....this wasn't as inconvenient as it sounds, since I use my preferred WM 99.7% of the time.

That's not too far off. In essence, that's what is happening. If you look in /etc/X11/xinit/ there is an xinitrc for each window manager. take a look (from my system):

I'd just create few bash aliases that look something like this:

alias startxfluxbox='echo "exec fluxbox" > ~/.xinitrc && startx'
alias startxgnome='echo "exec gnome-session" > ~/.xinitrc && startx'
alias startxkde='echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc && startx'
etc.

kinda cheap but it works, lol
