How to find ipaddress of the device connected to the system..

This is the ip address of your machine.

You want to look at an external cable to get the address??
Not to sound smart, but that is like looking at the outside of the computer and knowing it has a word processor installed.

I guess not. You can find out the ip address of the system you are working on. But on other system connected through a cable? I do not know. I have not done anything like this. I doubt it.

Any Device which is connected to a computer or a network won't pick up an ip address automatically. You have to either configure the ip address in the device or setup a DHCP server in the computer or network for the other device to automatically pick up the ip address.

If you are wanting the Ip address of whatever you are directly connected to then just use nmap which will scan a given subnet and return results for hosts that allow returns. Something like a firewall can affect the results, but generally you will get some result including the ip address. Assuming you are on a class C 10.0.0.0 network then the nmap command would be This of course is dependent on the network actually being in a working state.

If you mean across the net, I'm not sure how, but it's doable.

My question is i want to find the ip address of embedded device(like beagle board ) connected to pc. is it possible to assign ip address of our own to pc and other devices connected to it

well im not sure about you're question , but if i'm right , i think you are asking if we can set ip addresses for a device and make it fixed so it won't change? if that is your question , then yes its possible but only if the device/pc is not reset or if the os is reinstalled in the pc , the ip addresses will change and if the device is reset everything will be reset.

you can always try finding an ip range scanner such as Angry IP scanner and give it a range of ips (based on the ip/subnet of your machine) and let it scan, and chances are ONE of the ips it finds will be the one you are looking for

You can assign an IP address to your computer or any device if it facilitates setting an IP address, and, provided that you run a DHCP server, you can even assign IP addresses to the devices on the network so that they can automatically get their IP addresses.

If you have a DHCP server on the network or if you are so sure that your device is picking up and IP you can use the IP scanner suggested by frieza. If your board didn't pick any IP address or you haven't set any IP address to the boards n/w interface then you cannot find by such IP scans.


Now, are you running any Operating system on the board. If it is Linux, I am sure you can install some package with which you can set the IP. If you are not running any OS, then there must be some way in which you can set the IP address, refer the board's manual.
