Here is a long thread of discussion on that topic at the OpenSuse forum. I hope it helps.

okay, so I'm now going to try to erase openSUSE and install Ubuntu 10.10. So how do I make a bootable usb drive with Ubuntu 10.10 on it to erase this installation of openSUSE 11.4 ?
I already have a usb key, and the .iso. I have tried making it on windows xp, but when I plug the usb drive in, it doesn't boot.

solved - I simply created a bootable .iso on usb of Ubuntu 11.04 on my works' notebook. I then booted from it and erased OpenSuse 11.4 and am quite happy with the results.
