Hi! I'm desperate. I didn't sleep all night trying to configure my server to route other computers in my network for the internet.... Under W98 (winroute) it works perfectly. I have two LAN cards inside, internet is working on server, but no other computer works.... I've tried some ipchains commands, tried to install someone's masquerade file with IP changed to main, no use.... Doesn't work anyhow.... HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP! How should I force it to work?

what kernel does rh6 run ?
have u installed a router ?
post you iptables / ipchains masquerating / nat / mangling tables for us to look at.

are you using the server as JUST a router, or do you need to also use it as a loggin terminal ?
if you just want a router, have a look at coyote-linux.

its a linux distro that fits and boots of one floppy. turns any 386 or better pc into a router.

cant remember its address but search it with google.com/linux

or consider upgrading, redhat 9 and fedora work as routers just fine.

Thanks for the answer, here's the situation: I have fresh-installed (did it six times since yesterday....) RH61, two LAN cards, on eth0 (connected to a cable modem) there's IP: 213.113.232.176, gateway for it 213.113.232.1, on eth1 it's 192.168.0.1 - that's connected to switch, to my local LAN. Internet's working on the server, so it has a connection. Both DNS are set correctly, what should there be as a default gateway? 213.113.232.176, 213.113.232.1 or 192.168.0.1? I'm feeling dizzy because of it... What should I do now? Other computers are set to default gateway and DNS server for IP 192.168.0.1, and they have similar addresses like 192.168.0.2,3,4....etc. I've updated the kernel, added protocols, but nothing changed... I'm not sure, were the commands for ipchains good, or not. Could you help me with commands for those settings? I'm a little bit wiser since yesterday, but that's killing me... Another thing. I'm planning to make it an Apache server, FTP and MAIL, and I've started to learn Red Hat, I got it on my workstation, so I would be glad to have another RH on my server...

ok.... here's what i know...

the subnet mask on all machines should be 255.255.255.0

all Lan computers should set to use gateway to the lan address (starts with 192.168) of the router.

and the router should have the apropriate router software installed.

what router daemon did you install, is it configured properly ?

I didn't install router for now, every sources says, that ip masquerading set by ipchains command is enough for access of other computers to the gateway. if I should install some daemons, please tell me what, i haven't done that. and what's gateway on my server settings? ip which is a gateway for my static ip, or my static ip, or ip of the second lancard used to connect to my local network? on other computers the gateway setting is an ip of my server 192.168.0.1, but what should be set for a gateway on the server? is there two others configurations for both lan cards?

The Server IS A GATEWAY !
it doesnt need a remote gateway IP. but try setting its gateway to 127.0.0.1 (loopback)

other computers should have there gateway set to the servers LAN network card's IP

so....
Lets have a look at your IPCHAINS rules for IP-MASQ and IP-NAT so we can see whats wrong with the setting u have manually entered.

I've recompiled the kernel with net firewalling, ip firewalling, ip masquerading, ip icmp masqerading according to some article in chip special and then i've wrote ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.0.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0. Now I have routing for some protocols, mail is working ok in a windows workstation, GaduGadu (something like icq) is ok, but WWW doesn't work....

dont you need network address translation (NAT) ?
or is redhat 6 kernel too old for that ?

That's the problem, I don't know, what exactly I need... I don't have much time for now, and the computer is always "in motion" - I have several users linked to it, so I can't just turn the net off when I want and spend some quality time with linux... All I have done before is W98SE server and Winroute, linux isn't that simple - and that's why I'm loving it. But for now, I don't have much time, sad, but true... I don't want to think, what I should do after running all protocols routed.... firewalls..................

can you schedule some downtime ???
or do it at night after hours ?

i would SERIOUSLY recomend upgrading to redhat 9.

redhat 6 uses a verrrrrry different methosd of applying a router,

OR..... here is what you should be doing... BUY A HARDWARE ROUTER !

they cost about $60
the look like cable modems, but there not.

and they do everything.

in my opinion, a software router (what u are trying to install)
is for kids who's parents dont give enough allowance for them to do it properly :P

And how is it with rh9? maybe I'll do it... Is there any command that does it all? I suppose, that I have to configure DNS daemon, or something.... And about the router, I want to do it, to learn, how to do it...

i have redhat 9, i folled the example for cable modems with iptables (kernel 2.4)

and it worked straight away, within 10 mins i had gone from not knowing i needed a router, to haveing a software one up and running. (probably cos i was luckyy enough to coma across that page on google)

redhat 6 will work, i just cant find any how-to's that dont assume you have a newish distro.

I have RD5.1, the distribution I wanted to install, because I have a book attached to it , and there's a lot of explanations, but many things are awful in 5.1, so I've found 6.1, that's much better, believe me, then I've had RH70, and I have downloaded RH90, but it's big, and I've thought, that I don't need anything new for this simple task, simple is better, but maybe RH9 is much more simple to use that 61.... dunno...

if you want a distro to do nothing but routing, then use LRP
