Elementary Question - Can't Edit File - Need Root

Hello forum,

I've been away from Linux for several years and have forgotton much of what I once knew.

I need to edit a file in the /etc directory but it will not let me do so since I don't have permission to do so. How can I edit this file?

I know I have to have root priveleges but I forgot how to do so. I am able to go into root using the terminal window (su) but that's all I know.

Thanks in advance,
Roy

you could use kdesu, which will give you kde as root or cd in terminal to the file you want to edit.

Lightbulb

once u have done su and become the root, type

kedit /etc/name of file

This would open up the file in the kedit (only if u have Kedit installed. normally it would be installed if u install KDE.

If u dont have Kedit , u could use some other text editor
or if u have pine installed use

pico /etc/ name of file

or any other text editor, vi, vim , emacs etc.
though i thnink you should go for , kedit , or nedit for now.
emacs /etc/name of file
