Don't have permission to read DATA partition; partition no longer visible

Hi,

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for just under a week. Recently, a partition called 'Data' has disappeared, and all my music and documents along with it. The folder is not to be seen in Places or on my desktop. My only way of finding it is to go to terminal. But when I try to open it there I get an error saying I don't have permission to read it. In Puppy Linux and SliTaz I can easily find the partition and read it. What should I do to bring it back in Ubuntu?

Check the permission settings on the mount point with the partition mounted. Use a terminal to execute the following command.

Code:

ls -lhd /mountpoint

Then check to see if your account falls into one of the settings allowed to access the directory.

I notice, for example, that my Ubuntu 10.04 system does not put users into the users group by default so if a mount point was owned by root:users and had permissions rwxrwx--- then I would not have access to it under Ubuntu but I would have access to it under other distributions.

I followed your instructions. This was my output:

robert@robert-1001PX:~$ ls -lhd /media/DATA
drwxrwx--- 1 root root 4,0K 2010-10-15 19:35 /media/DATA
robert@robert-1001PX:~$ groups
robert adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin admin sambashare
robert@robert-1001PX:~$

If I understand correctly, /media/DATA is mounted as root and therefore I don't have permission to read or write to it. Is there a way of altering the way it is mounted so that I may have access to the partition again?

u can try this.

chmod a+rwx /media/DATA

this will allow every1 who logs in to read, write and execute it.
