Question Can't print, no ethernet, pls help!!

Good day. I am very new to linux and so far think it is great. I first installed it on a laptop to get a feel for the OS and having liked that, I went ahead and installed it on one of my older desktops.

The problem is that I can not get my printer or my ethernet to work. I am not sure what I should do. I have run the printconf-gui command and installed it from there(I have a lexmark Z32, and am running red hat V8). When I try to print a test page it just says there was an error when trying to print. I have also downloaded the tar from Lexmark, and the files seem to be in the \usr\local\lexmark dir. I am sure I am doing something silly, but what?

As for the ethernet, I have two ports. One directly on the mobo and the other an extra card. The extra card worked on the system when it was a windows system, so I am sure this one can get to work - just not sure how to get it going. I am still learning all this stuff, so if it is an easy solution please forgive me but the book that came with the red hat is less than stellar when things don't go exactly as hoped.

ANy help or ideas would be very appreciated.

Thanks..

what distro are you using? try this command for your ethernet 'dhcpcd eth0' where eth0= the card you want to use

Thanks for the help

I tried that command from the terminal and it said that the "command not found". I am using Red Hat V.8. I bought a book (The Red Hat Bible) and that came with the disks. I tested all the media and it all came back OK to install.I am really REALLY new to all of this, but I think the OS is awesome and once the learning curve is done this OS is so superior to anything I have seen with MS it isn't even comparable. However, for now, if you could really dumb it down for me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks to all for any help.

I ran the printconf command and got the following, what does it mean? Is it easy to fix?

<<<<

(printconf:4030):GLib-GObject-WARNING**: invalid cast from (NULL) pointer to Gobject
(printconf:4030):GLib-GObject-CRITICAL**:File Gobject.c: Line 972 (g_object_get):assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

In all honesty, I would shy away from Red Hat 8.... I mean its just flat out old. If you want to stick with Red Hat (not that I could see why I would go with either 9 or the FC1

I have no feeling one way or another towards any Linux system. I was wavering on the Linux bandwagon for a few months and then I saw this book with the disks and thought why not take the plunge? I installed it on my old laptop and thought it was great, but the laptop has nothing connected to it, so really, there was no nothing for there to be a problem with.

What would you suggest for someone who is new to linux(obviously)?
