can't read superblock - new kernel

I compiled a new kernel (2.4.22) for may laptop that has a DVD+RW and whenever I try to mount a cdrom it give me the error:

mount: /dev/cdrom: can't read superblock

I use the "mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom" command. I get this error when I try to mount any CD, burned CD, stamped CD, any CD! I'm guessing I just forgot to compile something into the kernel. Any ideas?

maybe the problem is with the filesystem support.
Can your kernel read iso9660 ?

Yes, iso9660 support is compiled into the kernel.

I've just done the very same thing i.e. recompiled and think I must have left something out.
I can only add that syslog has this in it:

modprobe Can't locate module ide-cd.
