Can't Even get to the GUI

I'm just starting to learn linux. I'm running mandrake 9.X on VMware and on boot, I can't even get to the GUI (i guess what I'm trying to say is whats the command line to get to the 'windows' part). Also does anyone have any sugestions to someone who doesn't know anything about linux and has no support from friends because they all use windows. Thanks
Sincerely
Brian
