I am brand new trying to install SuSE 9.0 personal on an old computer so I can learn Linux. I have tried everything the installation manual suggested,except the cd rom being to old. I upgraded the BIOs and still cant get it to boot. I don't know anything about Linux really I have looked at all the different sites and can't seem to find the answers. I am using an old Dell Optiplex GXi with a Pentium MMX with a 166 mhz , 2 gb hard drive, 32 mb ram, and it currently is running Windows 98 se, Is there another way I can get the cd's to boot or another option I can use to install. Thanks for any help, I am really excited to learn Linux and I hope that I will be able to I am just learning computers and it sometimes doesn't make sense to me but I am willing to try

Your pc won't run it. The SuSE Hardware Requirements List states you need 64mb of ram (at least, 128mb is recommended). It also asks for 400mb to 3gb at least for the Personal Edition. Your best bet is to buy more RAM (lots more) and I'd also suggest a bigger hard drive.

Thanks, I kinda thought that was the problem, I have another computer to use, with all the requirements, but I am waiting on new parts to build new computer the first of the week then I can use this one, are there any small distros I could put on that would help me learn Linux?

Slackware is small but the drawback is that you have to know what you are doing - may be better to wait (as I am doing)

As a stopgap, you could try Knoppix - it runs entirely off the cd - a good way to try out Linux without spending time installing it. The drawback is that settings only hold while the cd is running, reboot and you're back to a fresh copy.

Have a look at Distrowatch and see what takes your fancy.

Vector 4.0 will run very nicely on that machine. It is pretty simple to install, and should automatically find your hardware, too.

Thanks again you guys, I might wait and try the SuSE on this computer at the beginning of the week when I get my new computer parts, I have ordered to build my new computer, I currently have one with Intel Celeron 366( i think ) a 6 gb and a 80 gb hd, 256 ram, and I also have a Dell Inspirion 2650 laptop with P4m 1.8 ghz, 20 gb hd, 256 ram, the parts I have coming are AMD Athlon Xp 2400, 80 gb hd, 512 Ram...hee hee I know I am getting way over my head with all these computers.
