Still a Newbie
Running Mandrake 9.2 .
Apache 2
After accidentally extracting some files into /var/www/html
I deleted them and restored the original files from a backup. I now get on
the browser.

I have tried changing permissions for /var/www/html to
group apache and owner apache and 755 permissions
and the individual files. I have done the service http restart .
Still the same message. What other things can I check?
Server has it's version messages so I guess the server is partially functional ?
How can a simple file replacement foul up the permissions ?
I have tried it on the LAN and from the WWW side same message . Mail server is still working so
internet is connected and working. External firewall hasn't been changed.
I found it . Checked permissions with ls -la . Turns out there must have been a .htaccess
file in the archive I extracted. The ownership of the .htaccess file looked fishy so
extracted the archive to a dummy directory and the creation date and ownership of .htaccess was the same as the one in /var/www/html directory, deleted it and all is good again.
