Problem Installing ethereal rpm's for fedora core 4
Hello ,
Iam working on a project which involves sending udp packets across the network . I learnt that ethereal can be used to capture the udp packets and analyse them. I tried to download the rpm but since my processor is i686 and iam using fedora core 4. i dont find any rpm matching this case. If anyone who has a similar system config and has downloaded ethereal or if anyone knows any thing that cud help this prob , please let me know. Thanking in u in anticipation.
Hi stephenwalter,
Ethereal is installed in Fedora core 4 by default. if you have not installed this, you can get the rpm from your distro:'s cd . Also you can compile ti from the source code which you can find from the ethereal download site : http://www.ethereal.com/distribution/rpms/all-versions/ . you can also create an rpm from this source if you want to.
vimal..
Hi vimal,
Thanks for ur reply. But i already found the rpm for the i686 processor and tried installing the rpm but. i got an error like this failed dependencies.i got 6 failed dependencies. I found 4 of them and installed them sucessfully but the other two namely libcrypto.so.1 and libpcap.so.1 are creating problems. But the interesting thing is that the these two are present in the lib folder of my system. I tried to change the path but it still does not work out. Please help me if u have any idea abt this
Hi ,
Thanks for your reply i had tried this previously but no use. The yum output tells me that the installation is complete but no such command like ethereal was present in my machine.
Ok, just leave that thing. After all RPM installations are not always easy as they say it is. You can get the latest source code from the Ethereal website and just compile it according to your needs. Compiling a software from source gives you more options than a pre-compiled RPM. There are many useful options that can be configured at the compile time.
Always put your ethernet card in promiscous mode when running Ethereal, otherwise you won't get the desired results.
Hi ,
Its been really a while since i posted this thread, yum was the right way but u will have to type the command as
yum install ethereal ethereal-gnome
just found out in another thread
this works fine.
Thanks anyway,
