If java is cross-platform, why don't S60 apps work on S40?

Java was supposed to be cross-platform. Yet j2me java apps for symbian S60 phones do not work on S40 phones. Why is that?

because the hardware is not the same. S60 has some functionality which are not available on S40. Therefore the apps running on S60 are not able to run on S40.
