I have the Problem to install some Programs .. which I get from '01net' ! ... the README-Directions don't work ! ... 'make install' ask for Target .. and Directory ! ... how to write those directions ? ...

is there an Installation-Wizzard for Linux ? ... like they have it for Windows ! ... or ... how to install a program from the Outside ? ...

that's the Question ! ... from Casey972 ..... like Firefox-3.5.5 ! ... or 'Coyote' .. or 'Wolverine' .. or 'WifiScanner' .. or 'ZipCracker' ? ..

In Mint - it's called Mint-Install ...
that's the wizard.

Welcome to LQ!

First, always install using the package manager if possible--in the post above, it looks like it might be called "Mint-Install", but look for something that says "install software" or similar. You might --eg--have Synaptic or Adept, also.

If you do install something that is not available in the package manager, then there are several methods, including compiling from source code. The "READ-ME" file typically has directions---or there will be directions on the site where you get the application.

Don't look for things to be "like Windows"----some are, and some are not.

Give us the specific instructions and exactly which question you don't understand. If the installer is prompting you for information, you would simply type it in. If it asks for a directory, there is usually a default shown.

True, but...the usual cause of something not being in the package manager is that the package manager does not have the additional repository enabled which contains the program of interest. The exact details of which additional repositories you need to enable and how will vary from distro to distro, but it is almost always easiest to try the 'use the package manager, whatever the program' approach first for a neophyte, even if it does mean that you have to ask again about mint-specific repos.

Indeed---I suppose what I should have said is: "First, learn the package manager inside-out, including how to set up different repositories."
