Disable APM totally, and use ACPI for management. It's not a good thing to have both enabled. Also ACPI controls other such goodies as the fan and/or other hardware sensors.

Using ACPI solved several problems on my laptop...APM just wasn't worth it.

Guys, I feel you all!

I just got my new Fujitsu C2210, which is a Intel m speedStep 2.2ghz, with 60 gigs of space, 520megs of ram, firewire, Dvd writer, Internal Wirelss network card, and all the goodies you can imagine....

Well, I'm running into the same problem, I haven't been able to make Linux manage my power in my laptop.

Same problem, battery lasts very little, while in Windows lasts a lot longer, and there is not automagic control of screen brightness like in Winbloze, nor is there suspend, or any of the at least basic features.

I'm working on it, and I've found so far that for the most part, many BIOS's don't support APM....and that is why APM simply doesn't work.

As for ACPI, it is still under heavy development, and all you will probably get is being able to read the battery level...and maybe some CPU idleing power saving feature

but don't expect much.

Right now I'm trying to check if the ACPI feature will work at all.

I'll let you guys know.

Further development of ACPI is our last hope.

and I still can't make the Internal Wireless network card work!, what a bummer!, Errr!

Same problem here. I disabled APM (actually made it modular) and recompiled.

Still no luck. I tried 'dmesg|grep -i -C3 acpi' and got:

In Mandrake 9.1 ACPI is disabled by default...
Edit /etc/lilo.conf (if you use lilo, if you use grub I don't know) and remove the startup option "acpi=off"
Hope this helps,

Leonardo

I don't think it's even activated in the default kernel in Mandrake 9.1. There has been some discussion about this - here, for instance.

I have had no problems using SuSE 8.2 on my Compaq 2170. I did have to enable the acpid daemon to get the battery monitor to work. I found a KDE app called aKpi that shows battery usage and also CPU tempature.

Leonardoce, thanks for the suggestion but lilo.conf didn't even mention acpi before I entered it in, and it still says that! Is there some other place I can look? Oh yeah, I also checked to make sure ACPI was on in that Mandrake control thingy. I think I may just format everything and start from scratch (WinXP just isn't worth the 20 or so gigs it's allotted I figure (that is if I can get acpi working ) I've also heard that compiling a different kernel (other than the one included in the install cds) may be of some help. Oh well, it will have to wait for a little while, time for a 3 day Rave!

Yeah, it picked up my ACPI, finally.
Now, I just need to make some configuration, and it should all be set,.

For those of you who are having trouble, the best thing to do, is to go and download the 2.4.21 kernel, which has an updated ACPI support, and it is bound to work!

Compile your new kernel with ACPI support, and it should work, trust me guys.

Good luck, really!!!

Hello,

ACPI is working on my laptop Sony PCG-FR215S with Mandrake 9.1 pre-compiled kernel.....
I've simply enabled acpi, installed acpi packages and using lilo!!
Do you use lilo??
Ianed, could you post your default lilo.conf entry?? Thanks!

Hey, the lilo options should contain "acpi=on". On my laptop, the lilo entry looks like this:

Code:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.25mdkcustom
label="linux"
root=/dev/hda6
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.21-0.25mdkcustom
append="quiet noapic devfs=mount hdc=ide-scsi acpi=on"
vga=788
read-only

Hi I could not get my battery monitor work ether, it tells me that I have a partial APCI installed, which is strange as it works fine in W2000.
So I just watch the the battery light on my laptop, when it flashes orange I charge the battery, by the way my distro (SuSE 8.1) seems to extend the battey life.
