I recently bought the X1600 as well; having avoided ATI for
years because if they can't write a stable Windows driver, what hope do they have for Linux (a competent OS)?
Well, I've been fighting with SuSE 10.0 (and 10.1!) with the downloaded Radeon drivers.
http://linux.wordpress.com/2006/05/1...s-installation may be of help... OTOH, as they did not for me and I've done TWO fresh installations, I suggest this far more viable method instead:
reading your receipt and returning the video card within the return time may be the better course of action and say why to the clerk. Nvidia's drivers are so much better in design and installation execution.
I'm going to reformat with Fedora 5 overnight and try once more tomorrow. At $250, the X1600Pro w/512MB RAM is a nice deal, but this hassle is asinine; especially if ATI wants to encourage people to use their product. At this point, I wouldn't... I'm Nvidia for life.
It will work in 2D mode as I'm using it right now. But 3D is impossibility; and I didn't spend $250 for what my previous card (Nvidia 5900GT) can do, sans the occasional video distortion... sigh.
