My mobo has a 4X AGP slot, but all the current cards are 8X. After digging around it appears that an 8X card will work, but is there any difference between the different AGP standards ?? i.e. it seems my current card is AGP version 2.2 so is that just a technical difference or a physical one (as in, a different type of slot).
Hence will all AGP cards fit the same slot or are they different ???
Originally posted by heema i also have a 8X AGP graphics card working on a 4X AGP slot , the only difference that i know its just the 8X is faster
Oh OK, thanks for that heema. I suppose it would be safer if I switched the system off and pulled the card to make sure that I know what the plug and slot look like - as when I've been looking, there have been some pictures with 2 plug in tab sections and some with 3.
Better to be safe as it looks like the best deal will be online, rather than going to a store/shop.
You also need to ensure that the card and the slot are designed to operate at the same voltage, apparently. At least it says so in the manuals for my kit.

Yup, spotted that one. I understand that most of the 8X ones actually operate at 0.8Volts, and even though my board is a 1.5Volts AGP slot model, as far as I can find out - the only danger would be using a much older 3.3Volt model.
