modem fails to re-connect (sometimes) - weird
Hi,
I successfully installed a Best Data ISA (controller on-board) modem (model #56SF92). It took a while messing with jumpers, but I ended up installing it on /dev/ttyS2 using IRQ 9.
After I boot up I must manually run SETSERIAL to connect the modem (command: setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 9). Actually I added the above command to RC.SERIAL and renamed the file SERIAL. After I login to KDE I open a terminal and run $BASH SERIAL. This effectively sets the modem. (BTW - I'd love to find a way to run this program at bootup so I don't have to do it manually every time.)
After doing the above everything works fine the first time I run Kppp. It connects and works well.
However, after I disconnect I am often unable to reconnect. The modem will try to initialize, but returns no response to AT commands. I've checked this with both KPPP (query modem) and minicom. I've tried running SETSERIAL again but this doesn't work. Note also that this problem is somewhat sporadic. I really don't know what triggers the modem to not respond.
The only way to get my modem working again is to reboot. This is a pain in the butt.
Any ideas how to:
1) force the re-initialization of my modem without re-booting?
2) diagnose and solve this problem?
Thanks very much!
Greg
