Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

ESS Tech ES2838/2839 modem driver

I have what may be an old modem on a Fedora 7 box (2.6 kernel), a PCI card (internal), and pressumably Hayes compatible.

linmodems.org's scanModem reports my modem is a ESS Technology ES2838/2839 SuperLink Modem and is not supported. I'm taking that to mean the modem is old.

The question is: should I care if I have a driver specific to the ESS Tech modem? Are there any generic PCI modem drivers available?

I would think there are generic drivers available as long as the modem is Hayes compatible....or am I wrong?

Thanks!
Tom D.

It depends on which chip set is on the card. Modem manufacturers chip sets have evolved over time (changing). And only Lucent Win modem with mars chip set can be installed on 64bit Linux for a PCI modem.

The only clues I see in the modemData.txt file is the following....

Code:
For candidate modem in PCI bus: 02:0c.0
Class 0780: 125d:2838 Communication controller: ESS Technology ES2838/2839 SuperLink Modem
      Primary PCI_id 125d:2838
Support type needed or chipset:	ESS.com

----------------end Softmodem section --------------

The ESScom 125d:2838 chipset modems are not supported under Linux.
 Read InfoGeneral.txt about hardware alternatives.
Also I did peek on ess.com but didn't see anything that resembled any form of Linux support.

Unless there's any clues I should seek with this modem, I'd probably replace it with a new modem that is supported.
