Hello All,
I have searched high and low (Google and Linuxquestions.org threads) to try and find a solution to my memory stick problem. I can't find which device it's on through the hardware browser or by using lsusb, lspci, or by checking the kernel output after inserting the memory stick. I have usb-storage, scsi, and scsi-mod??? loaded as well. I am running Fedora Core 1 on a Sony VAIO PCG-FRV25 with kernel 2.4.22-1.2179.nptl. I have not made any changes to the kernel this is the original stock FC1 kernel. I feel as if I'm running out of options here. I did have windows on this machine a few months ago and did a print out of all my hardware. Windows says this is an ISA device with IRQ of 4 Sony Memory stick controller (WB). Here is also what windows says:
Its a laptop. And your trying to use a piece of hardware, which only exists in that form in that model and that brand of laptop.
This should be simple.
No, it will not work, don't even bother going there. Find a usb or some other form of memory stick reader if you need it so more than just you want to use linux on it and people have a reason to make a driver for it.
Caeda,
This issue can't be impossible to fix. Nothing is impossible. It must be something that I am overlooking. Other VAIO users I have seen have built-in memory stick readers and they say red hat 9 and fedora core notice theirs. I don't understand why mine isn't being noticed. I have been experimenting with Linux for about five years now and have made the move. I don't see myself going back to windows because I feel a great sense of freedom with open source. Bound by nothing except a GPL or GNU and it's free. Not too mention anything can be customized without a hassle. I will continue searching...and when I find the solution I will post so other VAIO users will have less of a headache. I only wish I knew how to code. If you or anyone else can be of assistance it would be greatly appreciated. Until then the search must go on.
I have found that the device is actually a pci device listed under ttys0. It seems the kernel only recongnizes close to 17 megs of this 64 meg stick. I will be working (trying to figure out how to mount it because everytime i keep getting an error saying it's not a valid block device). Any help out there to finish this off once and for all will be appreciated.
I'm also having problems with this device and have tried most of the solutions that other vaio users have implemented with no luck. I recently found the following page by someone who has it working on an frv27 which may be of some help. There's no details as to what they've done but I gather they plan to update the page soon.
I sent an email to the linux-laptop mailing list, and Len Brown of Intel replied that maybe the Memory stick reader is being used (not sure terminology here) by ACPI, so I am looking into it, and *attempting* to write a driver - though no ETA on when it will be completed. Will keep everyone updated.
I have only been running Linux for about a week now but I have not booted into Windows since the switch. I would really like to get the memory stick reader working. Has anyone found anything new about this problem?
