FRUSTRATED!

Running RH8, latest kernel, etc. I can't hear CD sound in XMMS, so I installed cdread plugin...got RPM from german site. Installed fine, (I copied it into my /$HOME/.xmms/plugins directory, AND it is in /usr/lib/xmms/Input (both libcdread.so and libcdread.la files are there) but when I launch XMMS, look in plugin section, it can't be found. I installed other plugins too and they go into same directory, and XMMS can find no problem.


I have desktop and Laptop, same problem with both.....so I know it isn't hardware related....

????? Ideas?

xmms doesn't make a very good cdplayer even with the plugin. And besides, it's not worth the effort. I'd say just abandon those attempts right now.

Use something else like gtcd, or grip for cd playing.

Better yet, use grip or abcde and turn all those cd's into oggs. Then use xmms to listen to those.

Your opinion is fine, but I must disagree.

I use xmms on my PC to listen to all kinds of CDs including CD-DA, mp3, etc. Everything from my older Boston and Journey CDs to mixes that my son has prepared from mp3 files.

RH 8 does have issues with xmms, but specifically with the mp3 format. I would suggest you unload the RH version of xmms, then refer you to www.xmms.org and get their solution. My guess it'll work much better.

Also double check your permissions for /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer.

If need be, chmod 755 /dev/dsp and chmod 755 /dev/mixer. Also, make sure that your volume levels are turned up in xmms as well as in mixer. The defaults are set very low. BTW, I found that after doing some work inside the case of my box so I had disconnected all the cables and cords. When I plugged them in, I put the speaker cord into the microphone port. Check your cords too, just in case.

thx for suggestions, volume is turned up, and I am using laptop, so no wires to connect between CDROM & PC. The libcdaudio.so is the plugin that apparently needs the wire between CDROM & machine to work, and that plugin is present, I just can't get the cdread.so plugin to load when I start XMMS.

Very weird. I have no idea at this point. The only suggestion I can make is to open a terminal and go to your XMMS plugins directory. Make sure that any one can use the plugin you're having difficulty with. When I installed MPlayer, the GUI version would only run as root so I had to chmod 777 all the skin files. I'm supposing that in order for your XMMS plugin to work, you'll need to cd to the directory and chmod 777 <plugin name>. Then, restart X and open up XMMS to see if it's found this time. I hoping this will solve your problem. That's another thing, have you tried to startx as root and check your plugins for XMMS? If you find it there, then changing file permissions for the plugin itself will probably do the trick. Hope this helps.

You know.. this probabaly won't help but I used to have Xmms problems with the version that came with RedHat 8.0. I now use the one given by xmms and everything works fine. I even got the damn thing to read cd's from /mnt/cdrom.
