SuSE Linux 7 (2.2.16) does'nt poweroff during shutdown

Hi Guys,
I am a linux newbie. This problem may have been discussed allready. I have a problem with shutdown of the system. It does'nt poweroff when I use shutdown. Restart works fine though. What could be wrong ?
I use SuSE Linux 7 Kernel version 2.2.16.

Any solution/suggestion would be highly appreciated.

I think you need to have APM/ACPI support built in to your kernel to get it to power off on shutdown.

So you'll probably have to recompile your kernel, picking the APM or ACPI options while you are configuring it.

The first time you configure a kernel it will seem daunting, just take your time and make a backup!

I thought something like this would be required ... but compiling the kernel could be daunting but I will give it a shot. Another guy suggested me to modify the lilo.conf file and reconfigure the lilo and that will do it. I will try all of these.
