What do u mean by Linux project? If u talking about creating ur own Linux distro, go to Linux from scratch project website. Thanks and good luck with ur project.
Here's one I've been doing for a while:
I look in apt. complex dumpsters, classified ads, etc. for "obsolete"
computers that I can obtain as donations, or for a small amount of money, Load them with Linux , give them to people without computers, teach them how to use them and provide limited free tech support.. In the process, I've learned a lot about Linux, made some new friends all while having a blast (I'm a "tweaker" by nature) doing it. . Related to that, here's something I'm currently working on to take advantage of some of the really ancient hardware I've got piling up:
A "poor man's" Linux distro that will work with some of the really old stuff ( 2mb or less RAM, 200M or less (yes! M!!!) hard drives, 486 processors. So far, I'm thinking of something along the lines of Busybox with a stripped down kernel ( similar to slack81zip), using gmail or one of the others as a remote filesystem.
Hope this helped you.
Hey, joe, nice project! I was kinda trying to do this here in brazil (we don't lack people in the adequate social status to deserve a free computer...) but the old stuff vendors are too greedy, man! They wanna grab really deprecated stuff and boxes kept in basements for $ 1/ton and re-sell that with win3.1 for like a $400 (no matter what currency, its the proportion). These guys have no idea what can be done with a 486 16mb memory...
Anyway, good luck!
from what i understand, trying to get linux running in under 4mb of ram involves having the kernel use hard disk swap space, as it cannot all fit in so little ram.
that is only something i read about several months ago and may be incorrect as i do not recall where i read it
There are billions of projects that need helping before you go startin one of your own Check out http://sf.net I'm sure there is at least 1 project on there that any one of us could help out with.

Sounds like a plan. I'm not a programmer either, but I've never let the fact that I don't have a clue what the hell I'm doing stop me before!!
Besides, we got LQ for backup.
