sudo init 0
sudo halt
sudo /etc/init.d/halt stop
sudo shutdown -H now

I always 2 virtual console open, one logged in as root
(the other one as an ordinary user, where I occasionnally 'startx').
When I'm done I log off the user console and I
# shutdown -h now
from the first console


halt, init, shutdown
